UK move worsens maternal habits

The British Medical Journal study also showed they were more likely to stop breastfeeding sooner. The Institute of Child Health team said doctors should not assume ethnic minority women did not smoke or drink. A maternal health expert said it was “sad” that unhealthy habits became normal among immigrant groups. The research looked at women taking part in the Millennium Cohort Study who had babies between September 2000 and January 2002. 6% of the population was from an ethnic minority group – up 44% during the previous decade.

All American Patriots – All American Patriots (press release) – Apr 11, 2008
Newport Pediatrics, a two pediatrician practice near North Country Hospital, has a social worker who provides support if a child or family is struggling with a mental health issue such as depression. Sylvie Corriveau, 32, has been providing on-site counseling and referral services since January 2008. Her position is partially funded by a grant from the Health Department and the Department of Mental Health in consultation with the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program (VCHIP). ?The kids I work with are under a lot of stress and lack some of the necessary coping skills,? Corriveau said. ?I provide supportive counseling, case management and consultation, and I also provide referrals to therapists in the area. The more treatment and prevention services we can provide once we are alerted to a mental health issue, the sooner we can begin to work with these kids and allow them to move on. It?s important to connect with these kids as soon as possible.

Up to 60 children from central Australian Aboriginal communities, including Imanpa and Papunya, are being brought in for hearing tests as part of the Commonwealth intervention. The hospital’s general manager, Vicki Taylor, says two extra ear, nose and throat consultants and three additional nurses will help three existing staff to do the job. She says children will be bussed in on Sunday and next Thursday. “The children will be seen by the ear, nose and throat consultants on Monday and we expect to start procedures on Tuesday,” she said.

Africa lags behind in infant mortality goal
Independent Online – Apr 11, 2008
In at least 15 African countries, one out of four or five children never sees his or her fifth birthday, according to UN statistics. In the world’s richest nations, the corresponding figure is one out of 200 or less. “National and global attention to maternal, newborn, and child health is still strikingly inadequate,” Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet, wrote in a sharply-worded commentary. “Children and mothers are dying because those who have the power to prevent their deaths choose not to act,” he said. Seven of the 16 nations that are succeeding in the fight against child mortality were already on track when the countdown was launched in 2005, the study showed. They include Brazil, Bangladesh, Mexico and Indonesia, some of the world’s most populous nations. Six others were included in the Countdown process – initiated by UN and public-health scientists to spur progress – for the first time this year, including Eritrea, Peru, and Morocco.

Women who move to UK develop poor maternal health behaviours
The Cheers – Apr 11, 2008
The study discovered that longer the ethnic minority women live in the UK the more likely they are to smoke during pregnancy or give up breastfeeding early. The researchers from UCL Institute of Child Health in London conducted their study over 8588 mothers with singleton children from the millennium cohort study. The women were asked about their maternal health behaviours, generational status and length of residency in the UK. The researchers later compared their health behaviours during pregnancy including smoking and alcohol consumption and after birth, including initiation and duration of breast-feeding, reports British Medical Journal.
