1 million children would benefit from help with problems including depression, anxiety, anorexia, bulimia, hyperactivity, excessive anger, self-harm and suicide attempts. David Skuse, professor of behavioural and brain science at the Institute of Child Health in London, said there had been “a convincing increase” in conduct disorders such as bullying and fighting in boys and emotional disorders such as phobias and depression in girls. The Department of Health said the number of staff in child and adolescent mental health services and the number of cases handled had increased by more than 40 per cent between 2002 and 2005. Junk food A study published by the Mental Health Foundation and Sustain in January revealed that only 29 per cent of 15- to 24-year-olds ate meals made from scratch every day, compared with 50 per cent of the over-65s. The report said there had been a 34 per cent decline in vegetable consumption and a 59 per cent drop in the amount of fish eaten in the past 60 years, and only 13 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women ate five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. The internet A recent investigation by the London School of Economics revealed that at least one in 12 young people aged nine to 19 had met a stranger online, a quarter had received pornographic junk mail and a third had been subjected to unwanted sexual comments. Another report found that 12 per cent of 13- to 18-year-olds gave “searching for adult websites” as their main reason for using the internet.
Popular motel ditched by health officials

A modern 3½-star country motel good enough for Peter Beattie, Kerry Packer, Getaway TV presenter David Reyne and thousands of international tourists apparently was not up to standard for three Queensland Health bureaucrats on government business. After booking into the $85-a-night New Atherton Motel on the Tableland in far north Queensland on April 3 the child-health trio, unimpressed, secretly moved up the road to the luxury 4½-star Eden House Retreat & Mountain Spa, where room rates are about $200 a night. They didn’t sleep at the motel but paid for the night with their department-supplied corporate credit cards. Motel manager Chris Monk said nearly everyone who stayed at the motel enjoyed their time with few, if any, complaints. He said the three health professionals, who were booked in by a government travel agency, had asked him about a top-class meal and were directed to Eden House’s Heritage Restaurant 10 minutes away in the nearby historic village of Yungaburra. Mr Monk said the next morning one of the trio appeared and handed over the room keys and said they were checking out.

“This is a great opportunity for UNICEF and its partners in the government and civil society to raise awareness about the impact of poor sanitation and hygiene practices on children, families and communities”, she said. The UNICEF official said public awareness at village and union council level would be launched in six districts across the country to strengthen public health system. The official said Pakistan’s Child Health and Sanitation Week followed a model applied successfully in Ghana, where regular health weeks halved the under-five mortality within five years.
