The report urges Governments and their partners to improve health care for women and children, including by tackling obstacles such as weak health systems, funding shortages and inequalities in access. And while donor funding for maternal, newborn and child health has risen in recent years, resulting in significant health gains, health systems remain "grossly under-funded" relative to the needs, it adds.

Considering that morbidity and mortality rates are unacceptably high in The Gambia, he noted that such a trend is caused by health problems related to low awareness about health issues, poverty and poor environment conditions. "Infants, children and women continue to bear the brunt of malaria, diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, malnutrition and problems associated with pregnancy and childbirth," he explained. As a result, he indicated that at the level of the Department of State, more resources have been deployed in order to implement a comprehensive essential health care package that integrates the management of childhood illness and promotes reproductive and child health. He went further to say that Peace Corps’ Health and Community Development project seeks to improve personal hygiene and environment sanitation practices in order to reduce the incidence of malaria and diarrhoael disease. "The project is therefore relevant and addresses priorities of the Development of State and indeed of the Government of The Gambia, particularly Millenium Developments Goals," he added. They are expected to be encouraged to praise their children more frequently instead of repeatedly criticising them, while also establishing clear boundaries. The fifth in a series of six themed reports, the study to be published on Thursday will focus on children’s health, examining their behaviour and feelings of self-worth. The inquiry team is headed by Stephen Scott, professor of child health and behaviour at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. It is expected to refer to figures released by the Institute last year, which showed that the number of teenagers with emotional and behavioural problems doubled between 1974 and 1999, the latest statistical group available. The problems of social networking sites such as Bebo and MySpace, which may increase pressure on children to be ‘cool’ or ’skinny’ are also likely to be cited.

According to the most recent data, donor aid for health averaged US$7 per child and US$12 per live birth in the 68 Countdown countries. This is far less than the US$45 per person expenditure which is the minimum needed for governments to ensure access to basic health services.

Something familiar about the big ideas
The Australian – Apr 21, 2008
Mr Rudd has already promised a range of policies to reduce the gap and has undertaken to report each year to parliament on his progress. One new idea in health was for a requirement that, by 2020, all people working in sedentary jobs would have to engage in at least 30 minutes a day of physical activity and that offices would have to ensure stairwells were open to encourage employees to walk more. The Prime Minister’s own summit proposal of integrating childcare, child health and preschools services is already policy in the ACT and the summit’s call for the establishment of a world-class broadband system is identical to the Government’s proposed broadband network. Government sources said yesterday Mr Rudd had never promised that all ideas presented at the summit would be completely original and the Government was interested to hear of new ways of achieving the aims of existing ideas. module-content –>.
