Measles Infections in United States – Medicine and Health – New York…

McCain hits gas on health care
Denver Post – May 2, 2008
Rival Democratic Sen. Barack Obama doesn’t support the proposal, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ridiculed the tactic, saying it is “about the dumbest thing I’ve heard in an awful long time, from an economic point of view. ” McCain suggested that the small savings that would accrue for the average family could be used to buy a child a textbook. “Americans are hurting today,” the Arizona senator said at the town hall meeting in the Mizel Family Cultural Arts Center at the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center. “I have a plan of action to fix our economy, to make sure Americans remain in their home and to realize the American dream and educate their children. ” About 300 well-dressed, relatively quiet people filled the hall… They were a combination of anti-war activists and those who mocked Republicans as “fat cats. ” McCain’s main agenda in Denver was to emphasize aspects of the new national health care policy he outlined Tuesday in Tampa, Fla. “It is not the quality of health care in America that is the problem,” he said in Denver. “It’s the cost and availability of care. And the inflation rate associated with health care has been in double digits, and we can’t stand that. ” He repeated one of his favorite lines: “(If you) adopt the programs and proposals of Sen.

Deadly virus spreads among children in eastern China
International Herald Tribune – May 2, 2008
The intestinal virus, commonly known as hand, foot and mouth disease, has been spreading in the city of Fuyang since early March, but local health officials only announced the outbreak last week, raising questions of whether they were trying to conceal word of the growing problem. In recent days the Chinese media have heavily criticized the government response, offering comparisons to the SARS epidemic of 2003, which drew widespread attention to China's shaky public health system and official attempts to cover up the outbreak. On Thursday the World Health Organization warned that the disease, which thrives in warm weather, could spread in the coming months. It advised child-care centers and schools to stay closed until the spread of new infections was curtailed. The virus, which has no relation to the foot-and-mouth disease that infects livestock, is easily passed between children. The illness begins with a fever and often leads to mouth ulcers and blisters on the hands, feet and buttocks. There is no vaccine or cure, but most patients recover in a week without treatment.

Letters on national elections
News & Observer – May 2, 2008
Clinton and Obama over the past two years, and here’s what I found. Obama has missed 40% of the Senate votes over the past two years including an SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program) vote, and legislation aimed at cutting predatory student loan lending which should make a higher education more affordable. Obama’s health plan mandates health insurance for all American children while leaving adults to fend for themselves. Well, if he’s so eager to provide health insurance for children, why did he miss that SCHIP vote? If a child’s parent winds up with a chronic disease without benefit of insurance coverage, how will that impact the child? Hillary Clinton is the only candidate left in the race with a plan to make sure that every American has health insurance coverage mandating that the insurance industry cover pre-existing conditions and mental health issues. Clinton is also the only candidate to pledge research dollars to the fight against breast cancer, and she has fought to make sure that our returning soldiers with traumatic brain injuries get the treatment they need. Since Obama hasn’t voted for us, why should we vote for him? If we’re serious about change, Clinton is our candidate. Kim MurphyAsheville———————————————————On Tuesday North Carolina voters have an opportunity to deliver a message to opportunistic and destructive race hustlers among us in this country… Obama has missed 40% of the Senate votes over the past two years including an SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program) vote, and legislation aimed at cutting predatory student loan lending which should make a higher education more affordable. Self harm by children on increase
BBC News – May 2, 2008
Mr Lamb said: “These shocking figures are just the tip of the iceberg as most young people suffering from these illnesses will never make it to hospital. “The underlying problem is the lack of specialist mental health treatment. “The government has allowed child and adolescent mental health services to suffer drastic cuts over recent years. This means that many children are languishing on long waiting lists or not getting treatment that meets their specific needs. ”

Mr Lamb requested the figures in a written parliamentary question. A spokesman for the Department of Health denied that the government was not doing enough.

Uganda: Are Midwives Justified in Beating Women in Labour?

Its head peeked out, then disappeared again. GA_googleFillSlot(“AllAfrica_Story_Inset”);"Push!" a midwife coaxed. "Didn’t I tell you not to kneel? Lie on your back your leg here push! Okay? Push!" the mid-wife went on, despite pleas from the mother that she felt more comfortable kneeling down. "Push!" the frantic midwife shouted with full force, until the baby finally popped out from the birth canal… "He, however, acknowledges that some hospitals are many times understaffed, so midwives lose patience because they are stressed due to work overload. The issue greatly poses the challenge of convincing mothers to deliver from the health centres. According to the 2006 National Demographic Health Survey, attendance of antenatal care had improved to over 90% but skilled deliveries remained at 42%. While 23% of births are assisted by a traditional birth attendant, 25% are by relatives or friends, while another 10% of mothers did not receive any assistance. While there are different reasons, research further shows that midwives’ behaviours greatly discouraged women from going to deliver at hospitals and health centres. They would rather do it the risky way at home.
