Penn Health to build ‘home away from home’ for patients’ families

Barker Transplant House, which is described as a “home away from home, designed to help ease the unique economic and emotional stresses of transplant families. ”More than one-third of Penn’s transplant patients travel more than 50 miles for their surgery, with some coming from as far as New England, the Carolinas, and Ohio, according to the health system. The $2 million facility will be modeled after the Ronald McDonald Houses created for families with a child hospitalized away from his family’s residence. Penn’s facility, which will be built at 3930 Spruce St.
