Bush was hands-on for education healthcare; hands-off for planet
Christian Science Monitor MA
While people from across the political spectrum want changes in NCLB its core principles retain wide support including from Bush’s successor. ? Stacy Teicher Khadaroo Bush leaves a mixed legacy on healthcare. With Congress he expanded Medicare benefits to include prescription drugs and doubled funding for community health centers. But like presidents before him he did not resolve systemic woes in the healthcare system. During his watch the number of uninsured Americans rose from about 40 million to 47 million and healthcare costs soared at rates double and triple that of inflation. Average healthcare premiums are 100 percent higher than in 2000 making it harder for businesses to continue providing workers with comprehensive health insurance. Though heralded by many Medicare expansion to include prescription-drug coverage for the elderly remains controversial.

But don’t expect to learn about them in records maintained by the Texas Department of State Health Services although that agency oversees the Laurel Ridge hospital. Nearly all of the health department’s investigative findings are confidential by law. This allows Texas hospitals to operate in virtual secrecy – and keeps the public from knowing how well the agency polices these hospitals. "It’s a sad statement when you can find out more about a tattoo parlor than you can a hospital" said Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer D-San Antonio.

Homes are being foreclosed on and people are struggling financially. Many parents are being fired from their jobs. When this happens they lose their health insurance benefits. This means that if a child becomes sick parents are hesitant to take them to the doctor because they cannot afford to pay for the visit or medications if necessary. Parents should have help with their health insurance costs. The cost of living has increased over the years and the average household income has decreased. It is very expensive to purchase health insurance coverage for your family if your employer does not offer you medical insurance.

Should You Start Maternity Leave Before Baby Is Born?
Wall Street Journal Blogs NY
The researchers looked at nearly 450 women who worked full time comparing those who took leave after the 35th week of pregnancy with those who worked up to their due dates. Women who took early leaves were nearly four times less likely to have a c-section. “We don’t have a culture in the United States of taking rest before the birth of a child because there is an assumption that the real work comes after the baby is born” said Sylvia Guendelman the lead researcher and a professor of maternal and child health at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health in a press release. “People forget that mothers need restoration before delivery. ” Financial considerations however might prevent women from leaving work before giving birth the researchers noted. In a separate study the researchers found that longer maternity leaves led to a higher chance of breastfeeding. Women who took less than six weeks of maternity leave were four times less likely to breastfeed than those who took longer leaves.

Providence donation aids health clinics
Mail Tribune R
“This generous gift from Providence couldn’t have come at a better time” said Community Health Center Executive Director Peg Crowley. “Combined with other donations we are now better able to provide primary health care for the increasing number of families requesting assistance during these very uncertain economic times. The money will support health care for children through the clinic’s Every Child Can Have a Medical Home program and women through the Every Woman Can Have a Medical Home program. Crowley noted that even before the onset of the recession more than 35000 Jackson County residents lacked basic health insurance. In 2007 Community Health Center provided primary health-care services for more than 9000 patients of whom 59 percent were uninsured. “We have a tremendous respect for the services that Community Health Center provides to our community and share in the concern for those in need” says Providence Chief Executive Tom Hanenburg. Established in 1972 by a group of concerned community residents the organization provides affordable primary and preventive health-care services for patients of all ages through clinics in Ashland Medford and White City.
