Part of her credentials (aside from spending time outside our state campaigning for bama) is that she was the insurance commissioner here before her stint as governor. So she is familiar with Medicare and Medicaid. So?Won?t increasing the government?s involvement in paying our health care expense just increase all those lobbyists bama wants to rid from Washington? I can already see all the lobbyists pandering to HHS to approve their drug their X-ray machine their high-risk cure their facility their wheelchair their oxygen tank etc. I believe the HHS person?s main role is to increase the health of the nation while decreasing the expenses of health care costs.

They contend it would be foolish for Missouri to allow those matching funds to flow to other states. Republicans make two counter points. The first points to changes made to SCHIP the state funded children’s health care program in 2005. Those changes made the program eligible for many more children whose families paid premiums. The State Family Support Division says legislation approved in 2005 extended health care to 41000 children 16000 of whom lost health care when their parents failed to pay the premiums. The monthly premium rises to $109 for families earning between 186 and 225% of poverty and to $165 for families earning between 226 and 300% of poverty.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (which publishes the journal in which this report appeared) has spent ten years advising against any television for this age group but that doesn?t seem to have resulted in a ban on television in most homes. According to the report ?68 percent of children 2 years of age use screen media on a typical day and and one quarter of these children have a television set in his or her bedroom.

Today advocate groups from across the state converged on the State Capitol joining with legislators business owners and people who told of their own health insurance horror stories to launch a statewide grassroots effort to clean up the industry in Illinois. Nearly 30 groups including AARP Illinois PIRG AIDS Foundation and the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition are calling on the General Assembly to pass the Individual Health Insurance Fairness Act (House Bill 3923) sponsored by Representative Greg Harris. “We’re launching a statewide campaign to address a statewide problem – the insurance industry has a stranglehold on businesses families and those who are dealing with the loss of a job” said Bob Gallo State Director for AARP Illinois. “AARP commends Representative Harris for taking a stand on the critical issue of health insurance reform. “The grassroots efforts launched by the groups will include community forums and town halls held across the state on-line advocacy efforts a statewide petition drive and a new 800 number the Health Insurance Reform Hotline (1-800-664-9903) to help connect people directly with their legislators to urge support for the legislation. “We need to be sure that the law here in Illinois protects our families children and small businesses and is not there solely to help insurance companies as they deny people coverage and pad their bottom line” said Representative Greg Harris (D-Chicago).
