According to Kamara the 2008 demographic health survey indicated a reduction in maternal under-five and child mortality adding that with the newly established Directorate of Reproductive and Child Health in the ministry he is optimistic that maternal and child morbidity and mortality rate would be further reduced. “The government of Sierra Leone is ready to support healthcare in the country and all of these drugs will go to the right places” Kamara said. He added this success has been achieved due to the collaborative efforts of partners in the health sector including UNICEF UNFPA and WH. He urged the recipients to judiciously utilize the drugs and ambulances with a view to achieving the desired goals and objectives of the ministry and its partners toward the promotion of maternal and child health.

Children’s health: Will County a focal point of national study

The study will analyze details contributing to each child’s health such as the quality of the air they breathe and the water they drink in their homes. Scientists also will examine medical records and take hair blood and urine samples from them and their parents. The idea is to fully characterize factors that contribute to the children’s overall health so researchers can identify trends and determine how health problems can be best prevented or treated. “This is probably the most comprehensive most in-depth study on children’s health that will have been done anywhere in the world” said Dr. Jane Holl a pediatrician and director of the Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
