Those states are Arizona Connecticut Florida Illinois Louisiana Pennsylvania South Carolina and Texas. Missouri is the latest state to consider this legislation with House and Senate committees both recently acting on bills mandating childhood autism coverage. It’s baffling to me that the Michigan State Senate Health Policy Committee where these bills were properly referred last session has been given a pass on taking up these very worthwhile bills. It would seem that the chairman of the Health Policy Committee a medical doctor would best be suited to provide a professional medical opinion on policy that could help children who have been diagnosed with autism. Instead the bills have been referred to the Economic Development and Regulatory Reform Committee where it seems the bills have been sent to “die. ” Also the Republican-led Senate failed to address my bill to establish the autism tax check-off during our last session when I first introduced it and none of my Republican colleagues signed on as cosponsors when I reintroduced it. I urge Senate Republican Leadership to put politics aside and think of the needs of these children and their families.

researchers who analyzed data from a nationally representative survey of children born in 2001. “ur findings suggest that 19% of mothers of multiples had moderate to severe depressive symptoms nine months after delivery compared to 16% among mothers of singletons” the study’s lead author Yoonjoung Choi a research associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said in a Hopkins news release. “Mothers with a history of hospitalization due to mental health problems or a history of alcohol or drug abuse also had significantly increased odds” Choi said. “Non-Hispanic black mothers had higher odds compared to non-Hispanic white mothers. Mothers who were currently married Hispanic or with a high household socioeconomic status were less likely to have depressive symptoms. The data taken from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study — Birth Cohort also show that only 27% of all mothers with symptoms of depression said they had talked with a mental health specialist or a general medical provider about their symptoms. The researchers said their study published in the April 1 issue of the journal Pediatrics shows that pediatric professionals have to pay more attention to postpartum depression among new mothers.

This paper will examine the state of Hawaiiand suggest some lessons that can be drawn from their experience. n June 30 2007 Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle signed a bill known as the ?Keiki Care bill. ? Amongthe legislation?s provisions was the creation of the ?Keiki Care plan? which was to provide free healthcoverage to any child between the ages of 31 days and 19 years old who were ineligible for the stateprograms target to those with low incomes (either the state?s Medicaid Fee-for-Service or QUESTwhich is a state-run managed care program). The only additional requirements were that the child must live in Hawaii and have been without health insurance for six consecutive months. Those coveredunder Keiki Care would have no monthly premium and access to doctor?s visits for a $7 co-pay. vBefore the passage of this bill Hawaii already had a program through the Hawaii Medical ServiceAssociation (HMSA)–a nonprofit affiliated with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii–that allowedfamilies ineligible for QUEST or Medicaid to purchase health insurance coverage for a child for $55 permonth. viIn spite of these programs between 3500 and 16000 children in Hawaii were estimated to lackinsurance.
