bama Writes Fourth Grader a Memorable Absence Note
Washington Post
– John Corpus let his 10-year-old daughter Kennedy skip her last day of fourth grade at Aldo Leopold Community School to attend a packed town hall meeting where she could see the president of the United States up close. But things turned out to be more exciting than either one of them imagined. First President bama called on Corpus to ask a question about his plans for health care reform. As he posed his query he let drop that his daughter was skipping school to see the president. Does she need a note? bama asked. Playing along Corpus said he would take bama up on the offer. To his surprise bama was serious.

pinion: A doctor’s view: Cutting health care for California …
San Jose Mercury News
The reduction or elimination of this critical and successful state program would shirk our obligation to care for our state’s children and would threaten their chance at a healthy productive future. The proposed cuts are also fiscally irresponsible as the state would lose all federal matching funds currently supporting Healthy Families. Healthy Families is a low-cost insurance program that provides health dental and vision coverage to children who do not have insurance and do not qualify for no-cost Medi-Cal. The loss of this program would affect nearly 1 million of California’s children. This is the worst possible time to eliminate safety-net programs for children. The families affected are working families. Their children include many of the estimated 300000 children who have lost employer-based coverage due to the recession in the last year alone according to the University of California-Berkeley Labor Center.
Protein Branded As Culprit in Mad Cow Disease
Atlanta Journal Constitution
Mad cow disease is considered a prion disease because it has been found to be tied to the prion protein or PrP which normally is found on the surface of many cells — including those found in the brain. When the amino acids that make up PrP are folded or configured abnormally during their creation these malfunctioning proteins can end up in other parts of the cell and that is when the trouble begins. Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that misfolded or mislocated PrP can bind with another protein called Mahogunin which is thought to be vital to brain cells. The binding appears to reduce the effectiveness of Mahogunin leading to the death of healthy brain tissue and the onset of neurodegenerative disease. Mad cow disease formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy occurs when misfolded PrP binds with normal PrP in the body and converts it into more misfolded protein. “This advance sets the stage for future efforts to develop potential treatments for prion diseases or perhaps to prevent them from occurring” Dr. Duane Alexander director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development said in a NIH news release.

ur ailing health-care system is long past the point at which we can stop it from breaking down and it will cost hundreds of billions of dollars to fix. But I trust it’s different for most of us. When it comes to individual health care the model these days is not treating illness but preventing it. The prescription is prevention. Three-quarters of our health-care costs are attributable to chronic preventable diseases.
Health Care and Poverty – A Vicious Cycle
Huffington Post
Many of them have poor vision but do not get glasses since their families don’t have insurance for vision care. Furthermore many of these children are malnourished which means they are either underweight or overweight. Just because a child’s bones aren’t sticking out does not mean that his body is well nourished as obesity has a myriad of health problems that can complicate a child’s life. However many families are forced to rely on cheap unhealthy sustenance including fast food and empty candy store calories. Healthy foods such as produce and lean meats are more expensive than fried fatty foods and most families don’t have the option of buying the fresh food their children need to be healthy. These are just a few of the very basic health problems that can prevent a child from excelling in school. When children’s teeth ache from cavities when their vision is too blurred to see the chalkboard and when all they had for breakfast was a candy bar and a soda it is no wonder that their school performance is poor and their behavior is aggressive.
