Vigilance fast CPR stressed as child drownings approach Texas record

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department also collects statistics on drowning deaths but only those occurring in lakes rivers and the Gulf of Mexico. The Department of State Health Services requires other agencies such as police and health departments to report drownings within 10 days but those statistics are often delayed and may not be accurate. The health department 2008 statistics show far fewer child drownings than CPS. In 2008 CPS showed 82 children under the age of 17 drowned. Statistics from health services counted 49 drowning victims from infant to 14 years old; and 36 among those 15 or older. The information the health services department collects is not analyzed in real time said spokesman Doug McBride. The state has a system of Child Fatality Review Teams that analyze the data and issue recommendations on ways to help identify problems.
